2007 OUTLOOK

Four years ago the volleyball team at Westminster was a dismal 1-32. Fast forward to this season and the Griffins have hopes of a national championship. Since that season the Griffins have changed coaches, moved into a new facility and brought a new attitude to the gym.

Head coach Kim Norman believes that this year’s squad is easily the best ever assembled at Westminster, and is a threat nationally. Entering the season with a number 25 national ranking, plus a number three rating in Region I, the Griffins are definitely on the national map.

The team is loaded with everything from experienced seniors to talented freshman. Look for all 17 players to contribute at some point during the season.

Outside Hitters
The position with maybe the most talent for the Griffins is outside hitter. Senior Angie Johnson returns after a 2006 season in which she recorded 4.57 kills per game and earned all-conference honors. Johnson will be asked to lead the team in 2007 and is ready to take on that role.

Sophomore Alison Culp also returns in 2007 after earning all-conference in 2006. As a freshman, Culp was a solid performer for the Griffins averaging 2.90 kills per game.

In addition to Johnson and Culp, Westminster can go to sophomore Whitney Adams or freshman Janelle Kendall. Both are versatile and will see time at several positions, but naturally play outside.

Middle Blockers
This may be the deepest spot on the roster. Seniors Fa’aula Lobendahn and Ananda Lopes should begin the season as the starters, but they will be challenged. Lobendahn provides experience in the Westminster system while Lopes joins the team from Brazil, by way of Salt Lake Community College.

Freshman Ericka Evans will see plenty of time at middle this season. Evans comes to Westminster after a brilliant prep career at Layton High School. Senior Brittany Trabert and sophomore Kelsey Schaufler are also in the mix to get some playing time at middle.

Right Side Hitters
Brittani Barton is the front runner to start on the right side in 2007. Barton, a junior, has played in 64 matches over the past two seasons and is by far the most experienced Griffin at this position. Look for Kendall and Evans to also see some time on the right side.

Setters
Junior Monica Shorts is the most experienced setter on the roster. Shorts has played in 64 matches during her career at Westminster and is the school’s all-time leader with 2,492 assists. In 2006, she set a school record for assists in a season when she tallied 1,335 assists.

Freshman Leigha Dangerfield joins the program from Brighton High School in Salt Lake City where she helped the Bengals to the 2006 state championship. One of the top recruits in the state of Utah, Dangerfield will see plenty of time at setter in 2007. Look for the Griffins to run a 6-2 at times to utilize the talents of both Shorts and Dangerfield. Freshman Kylie Hudson gives Westminster some added depth at setter.

Libero
Senior Bree Riet enters the 2007 season as one of the best libero’s in the nation. Riet gives the Griffins a solid back row defender and will slow down an opponents attack. In 2006, Riet recorded 440 digs and has played in 64 matches during her time at Westminster.

Sophomore Tahnie Taylor will also see time at libero or as a defensive specialist. Taylor saw action in all 34 matches during 2006 and tallied a school record 548 digs. Sophomore Deseret Humphreys and freshman Katie McLintock will both contribute for the Griffins with their defensive ability.
