Community Education


The Fitness, Wellness, and Recreation Department is pleased to offer a variety of community education classes, open to the public. Some classes need to have a minimum number of students enrolled for the class to run (specified by course).

Register for classes online, in person at the reception desk in the Dolores Doré Eccles Health, Wellness, and Athletic Center, or over the phone by calling 801.832.2862 to register with a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover card.

Current and Upcoming Classes

This American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor class trains instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing your understanding of how to use course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participants' progress. If you are successful, you will be eligible to teach Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-Swim, 3 adult-focused courses, the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, and more. You must be at least 16 years of age and a proficient swimmer. The cost of the class is $175.

This class is perfect for anyone thinking about taking up the game, but wants to get started off on the right foot, or for people that have been playing golf for a while, but have never really had any formal instruction.

Local PGA Certified Golf Profession, and charter member of the Griffins Varsity Golf, Mike Nickas, will help to develop your game from the green all the way back to the tee. You’ll lean the five major shots including putting, chipping, pitching, irons, and tee shots; as well as learn about the rules and history of the game, club design, etiquette and how to develop good practice habits.

Sign up for this course and you will be well on your way to enjoying the game of a lifetime. Don’t have your own clubs? Equipment and practice balls will be provided to you at no extra charge! Classes will be held at the Rose Park and Jordan River Short Game Center (1386 N. Redwood Road).

This class is geared toward womxn, a group who currently make up one of the fastest growing demographics in golf. Join the Griffins strength and conditioning coaches to learn the basics of Olympic weight lifting and strength training. Each session consists of technique and skill development with lifts such as the clean, snatch, jerks, squats, deadlifts, bench press, overhead presses, and core. All participants will learn variations of each lift, how to properly progress and perform each movement, and how to prevent injuries. Instruction will be given for the first 30–45 minutes with open gym time to lift afterwards. Suited for all training ages. Each session costs $40.

The birds are singing, the sun is shining, and it’s getting warmer! It’s time to join PGA Associate Professional, Mike Nickas, to tune up your swing!

The Spring Golf Tune up is a four-session program designed for those with some golf experience to knock off that winter rust and get you ready for the 2020 golf season! Whether you are a regular weekly league player or someone that just likes to get out on the links a few times a year, this class will have something for you! In just four weeks’ time you will tackle all the major shots from the green to the tee and kick start your game for a fantastic 2020!

Practice balls will be provided for the class courtesy of Rose Park Golf Course. Classes will be held at the Rose Park and Jordan River Short Game Center (1386 N. Redwood Road).

The Yoga Basics course is perfect for anyone who would like to begin a yoga practice or move deeper into their existing yoga practice. The course will focus on the 8 limbs of yoga including postures, breathing, meditation, chanting, etc.

Instructor Jacqueline Morasco has been teaching yoga in Salt Lake City for over 10 years and has a special interest in making the practice as individualized as can be. She likes to take a gentle approach while strengthening and stretching the body, mind, and breath. The cost of the entire session is $70.
