All incoming students must have access to a laptop computer with at least Windows 7 or Snow Leopard (10.6.8). At this time, we do not support tablets. Current students may continue to use their previously certified laptops, which may be running older operating systems.

In an attempt to accommodate the widest range of possible mobile computers we have a simple minimum requirement set for qualification under the Westminster College Mobile Computing Initiative.

Operating Systems
  • Microsoft Windows 8 and Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Apple Macintosh OS X versions 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) or higher (including Lion and Mountain Lion).

  • HTML5 capable browsers, including (at minimum) Chrome 22, IE 9, Safari 5.1.7, Firefox 16, Mobile Safari on iOS 6.

Hardware
  • Must be a laptop, netbook, or other mobile platform that meets the operating system and hardware requirements.

  • Must be able to operate for a minimum of 3 hours on battery. This allows the student to work on battery power for the duration of a single class period.

  • The computer must have a webcam and microphone either embedded or as an add-on.

  • It must be able to connect to the wireless network using 802.11 standards g,a or n. We do not currently support 802.11b in our classrooms.

Virus Scan

It is very important to the Information Services Department that the college's network stays secure and virus free. We ask that all computers connecting to our network have virus scan software installed and up-to-date. If students do not have virus scan software already installed we recommend using Microsoft Security Essentials.

To support the institutional mobile computing initiative, the Information Services department has established the following service priorities.

  • To the extent possible, we will provide all available academic software to faculty and students both remotely and on campus via a remote desktop interface. Some software is restricted via licensing agreement and will not be made available. Additionally, software that requires specialized hardware or is incompatible with VMware View will also not be available via a remote desktop interface.

  • We will verify the configuration and availability of our remote desktop software and wireless access on campus. Individual computers are the sole responsibility of the owner and it is their responsibility to connect them to both the wireless and remote desktop software. We will however provide instructions and quick tips that cover the most common connection configurations.

Connecting to the Wireless Network and/or Westminster Anywhere
  • Faculty members needing support to get their laptops connected to the wireless network can bring their laptops to the Faculty Technology Center or the General Computer Lab. Faculty members can also call the computer support line where they can receive assistance via phone or make an appointment to meet with a full-time staff member Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
Using Laptops in Your Courses
  • Laptop Certification Program—This program was created as an alternative to classroom technology support. The IS Department understands faculty members cannot spare an hour of class time to verify student laptops are ready to go. All students are encouraged to participate in this program, but the IS Department is encouraging faculty members using laptops in their courses to require participation in the program.
  • Classroom Technology Support—In the past, the IS Department had a full-time staff member attend the first five minutes of any class held in a computer lab. Since the mobile initiative turns every class into a computer classroom, faculty members can request an IS staff member to attend the class to verify all students are able to connect to the wireless network and Westminster Anywhere. Please note: Classroom technology support can take up to one hour of class time depending on the number of students and computer equipment. If you would like to schedule a Classroom technology support for your course, please contact the Faculty Technology Center at (801)-832-2015.

Basic Laptop Support
  • The General Computer Lab, located in the basement of the Giovale Library, is staffed by student technicians. The student technicians are available anytime the library is open. A staff member is also available Monday–Friday from 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. The General Computer Lab is the best place for students to come with any technical problems. If the technician is unable to help the student, they may be directed to meet with a staff member during working hours or sent offsite for computer support.

Connecting to the Wireless Network and/or Westminster Anywhere
  • The IS department has started a Laptop Certification Program to help students connect to the College's wireless network along with Westminster Anywhere. Students may also be required to participate in this program for some of their courses.

Wireless

Westminster offers four ways users can connect to the Westminster College wireless network.

This network is open with no encryption. This is the quickest way to connect, but you will have to login (using your Westminster Username and Password) each time you connect to the network.

This is an encrypted wireless network that allows the user to configure their computer to automatically authenticate to the network each time they connect. It uses WPA Enterprise encryption.

Many consumer devices don't have the ability to use WPA Enterprise encryption. Examples of these types of devices are videogame consoles and networked digital media players. RecNet is a WPA PSK (pre-shared key) that will allow these types of devices to connect. Below are the instructions on how to connect to the RecNet network:

  1. Login in to WebAdvisor
  2. Click "Current Students"
  3. Under the User Account heading select "RecNet Device Registry"
  4. Complete the form to register your device (MAC address is needed)
  5. The password to the network will come in your Westminster Email

Eduroam (education roaming) is a secured wireless network that allows students, staff, faculty, and alumni of an institution to use their home institution's wireless credentials to automatically access wireless networks at other participating institutions without needing a guest account. eduroam is offered in over 40 countries worldwide, and is only in early stages of development in the United States. This documentation describes the services and connection methods as they are intended to perform. However, in practice you may encounter occasional difficulties at this or other locations until this new service becomes more established. We anticipate the standardization of the service will improve in the U.S. over time.

If you are visiting from another eduroam participating institution, use your home institution's log on credentials (if your device did not already connect). If you need help or support, you will need to contact your home institution to obtain setup instructions for your particular institution.

Laptop Certification

As a way to support the mobile initiative, the IS Department has developed a laptop certification program. The certification program will ensure the student's laptop can connect to Westminster's wireless network and Westminster Anywhere.

How does the program work?

  • Students will bring their laptop to the General Computer Lab located in the basement of the Giovale Library during normal library hours.

  • The student will need to visit with a technician at the help desk.

    • If the student has already connected to the wireless network and Westminster Anywhere, they will need to show their laptop to the help desk technician.

    • If the student needs instructions to connect to the wireless network and Westminster Anywhere, the help desk technician will have printed copies to give out.

    • If the student has tried to connect but has been unsuccessful, the technician can provide assistance.

      • The help desk technicians are trained to handle most technical problems, but if they are unsuccessful in solving the problem, the student will be asked to return to the lab during regular support hours (8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., Monday–Friday) to meet with a full-time staff member.

      • If the staff member is unable to successfully connect to the wireless network and/or Westminster Anywhere the student will be given suggestions on what is causing the connection problem along with recommendations on how to fix the problem.

  • Once the help desk technician has verified the student's laptop is able to access the wireless network and Westminster Anywhere, it will be certified.
