The MPC degree is designed to prepare recent graduates requiring advanced knowledge and skills in communication for positions in business, nonprofits, government, industry, and entrepreneurial endeavors. People with undergraduate degrees in various fields can pursue the development of important communication skills to enhance their current career path or to prepare them for new ones. Many of our students choose to do a doctoral degree after completing the MPC program to farther enhance their abilities.

Small classes and an accessible faculty

As a student in the MPC program, you will rarely have more than 15 students in a class. This intimate setting allows students to discuss issues thoroughly and collaborate on ideas and projects. Faculty members are very accessible to students, so you'll receive the one-on-one help you need for a successful degree. 

A measure for personal growth

Because the student-to-instructor ratio is so low, you can expect lots of interaction with your professors. They will monitor your progress over the course of the program and assist you in developing skills and completing projects that will help you achieve your career goals.

A practical curriculum

Unlike many master's programs that focus heavily on theory, the MPC program combines theory and practical application to provide a strongly career-oriented curriculum. Elective classes change yearly to reflect the latest trends in the communication field. You are encouraged to use work or community projects for classroom assignments and to immediately apply your new set of knowledge and skills to your daily work.


Courses are scheduled on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings, times most convenient for working professionals. With no requirement to be a full-time student, you can proceed at the pace that best suits your professional and personal obligations. If other responsibilities conflict with school, you can count on the faculty to work with you in resolving these issues.

Classes that utilize technology

To be a successful communicator today, you need to be able to do more than write well. You must know how to use the latest technology, including the Internet, social media, presentation and multimedia software, database systems, and other communication tools. The MPC program incorporates these tools into its curriculum to ensure that students learn how to use them effectively.

How Long it Takes

Depending on how heavy your typical workload is, you should be able to take between three and seven credits each semester. Whether you attend part-time or full-time (seven credits or more) is up to you, and you may choose to take a semester off.

The 36-credit-hour program is designed so that students can complete the program in two calendar years, but students have the option of completing the program at a slower pace. As long as you attend one class a year, you are considered in good standing.

About the Program

What You'll Learn

MPC classes focus on a variety of communication disciplines. Some classes concentrate primarily on the theoretical underpinnings of communication, while others focus on practical applications of those theories to topics such as integrated marketing communication, professional writing and editing, or web design and multimedia production.

Class work and discussion include hands-on participation, guest lectures, and some group projects. Students are encouraged to participate actively in discussions, suggest changes to the curriculum, and use projects from their employers for various assignments.

Plan of Study

The MPC program is not a lockstep program. However, completing the theory-based classes is a required foundation for applying those theories to practice. Once those classes are complete, you can take the application core classes and electives in any order.

Sample Courses

Every student earning an MPC degree must complete a capstone project. In addition to developing a professional portfolio that highlights your best work, you will complete a field project. The field project requires you to focus your interests on an internship or a client-based project that incorporates the knowledge and skills you have learned throughout your studies. This is a great opportunity to concentrate on a communication field that is particularly interesting to you and to add a major component to your professional portfolio.
