New gore school of business dean brings global perspectives to westminster

With the experience and vision to take the college to its next level of excellence, Westminster has hired Dr. Jin Wang as the new dean of the Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business (GSB). Dr. Wang joins the college after a nationwide search and will begin his position on July 1, 2011.

As the hub of Westminster’s most innovative, experimental and international programming, the Gore School of Business will benefit from Dr. Wang’s mix of administrative skills and international expertise.

Westminster College Announces 2011 Commencement Speaker
Westminster is pleased to announce that Bruce Bastian, co-founder of WordPerfect and head of the B.W. Bastian Foundation, will deliver the commencement address at the college’s commencement ceremony on May 28, 2011, at 1:45 p.m. at the Maverik Center (formerly known as the E Center) at 3200 Decker Lake Dr. (2200 W.) in West Valley.

“We are very pleased that Bruce Bastian will present this year’s commencement address to the class of 2011,” said Westminster President Michael S. Bassis. “His success as an entrepreneur and business leader, generous philanthropy to the arts and courageous support for human rights is commendable.

tWestminster's Meldrum Science Center Named Best Institutional Project Over $10M
The Utah Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has named Westminster’s Meldrum Science Center the Best Institutional Project Over $10 Million. The 60,000 sq. ft., four-story building is the first higher education campus building in the state of Utah to be awarded LEED Platinum certification.

Westminster Griffin "Trips" with New Admits

Many students who will enter college in fall 2012 had fun as elementary students gathering photos of Flat Stanley in various locations. Now, Westminster has replaced Stanley with its lovable mascot, Griff the Griffin, and is encouraging new admits to post photos of themselves with Griff to the college’s Facebook page as part of the “Trippin’ with Griffin” project.

Westminster College Becomes Utah's Only Hillel Affiliate
Westminster College has been selected to become Utah’s only Hillel: the Foundation for a Jewish Campus Life affiliate. Hillel is the largest Jewish campus organization in the world, serving students from more than 550 colleges and communities throughout North America and globally. At Hillel at Westminster, membership is open to Jewish college students from any school in the state. Currently, 35 students who attend Westminster, Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah are part of the Hillel. The group is student-run with support from faculty advisors.

Charles Ehin did a podcast interview this month with the Supply Chain Expert Community entitled, "The Non-Formality of How Work Gets Done in Organizations."http://bit.ly/eyTzMA. 

Michael Sutton will serve as a lead member of an international roundtable panel with a new Knowledge Management Educational Forum initiative on May 5-6. Sponsored by George Washington University (GWU) and Kent State University (KSU), the roundtable will attempt to identify the competencies and skills required by Knowledge Management educational programs.

Chris LeCluyse organized the Rocky Mountain Peer Tutoring Conference, April 1-2 at Westminster, and performed with the Texas Early Music Project in a concert of medieval French polyphony from Notre Dame.

Christine Seifert's article "Indecent Proposal: The Modesty Survey" was published in the December issue of Bitch Magazine and the April issue of Geez Magazine, and her article "Bite Me (Or Don't)" was reprinted in Pearson's  Reading Women's Lives, a women's studies electronic textbook.

4/15 Westminster Chamber Singers Present Annual Spring Choral Concert
Directed by Westminster’s Dr. Christopher Quinn, the Chamber Singers will perform a variety of musical selections at their annual spring concert. Some of the musical pieces include American Folk Songs like How Can I Keep From Singing, arranged by Taylor Davis; Down in the Valley, arranged by Richard Smith and other songs like Agnus Dei by Samuel Barber.
