About

Jeff McCarthy has a B.A. with Honors in European History from Wesleyan University, an M.Litt. in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Oregon. His research awards include a Fulbright Fellowship to Canada, a Humanities Center Graduate Research Fellowship at the University of Oregon, and a Visiting Research Fellowship to the University of Calgary Institute for the Humanities. He is an award winning teacher. Jeff has an extensive background in mountaineering including expeditions to Kenya, North Africa, the Himalaya and Alaska. He chairs Westminster's Environmental Studies program.

Research/Teaching Interests

Jeff McCarthy's writing appears in academic journals like Modern Fiction Studies, ISLE, and Philosophy and Geography, while his popular writing appears in outdoor magazines like Alpinist, The Mountain Gazette, and Climbing Magazine. His book, Contact: Mountain Climbing and Environmental Thinking, was published in 2008 by the University of Nevada Press.

Teaching interests: Modernist Literature and Painting; the Modern British Novel; Environmental Literature; Literary Theory; Mountaineering Literature.
