Program Description: The purpose of the program is to enable outstanding American students to study for two or, with special permission, three years in any participating University in the United Kingdom. The total value of a Marshall Scholarship depends on the British university and place of residence each recipients selects. This includes tuition, fees, a book grant, travel money, contribution towards the preparation of any thesis submitted for examinations (if required), and a personal allowance to cover residence and living expenses. In certain circumstances, a contribution to the support of a dependent spouse may be added. Up to 40 scholarships are awarded nationally, following regional screening and interviews. The initial national pool is 1,000 applicants. Application Procedures: Marshall Scholars require an endorsement from the candidates college or university, which takes the form of a presidents or deans letter, Interested and qualified students should confirm endorsement procedures and deadlines with their college or university fellowship officials very early in the fall. Endorsement is based on a consideration of the applicants grades and activities, the quality of the applicants essay, the appropriateness of the proposed plan of study, and the candidates adherence to the Marshall Rules for Candidates. Applicants who have been endorsed then complete their formal applications online and submit them, along with supporting materials, to one of eight regional processing centers. Interviews occur at the Regional level. The interview committees are comprised of former Marshall Scholars, representatives from British consulates, professors, representatives of other professions, and graduate students. Interviews are held in mid-November. For additional information and application materials, please visit the website listed above. |
