The Garfield School acquisition and renovation was the first step in the college’s move toward an extended campus as part of the Master Plan (link to CR Master Plan website). Westminster now officially owns the Garfield School and will create the Westminster Center for the Arts in this space. This decision was made after extended discussion between the Dean of Arts and Sciences, Westminster faculty, and the community.
The Garfield building consists of a historic school building and two later additions, with an area of 36,000 square feet on one and a half levels. The site is 4.6 acres and has approximately 180 parking stalls. This location will benefit Westminster by increasing the campus building area as well as providing additional parking within a short walk to the core campus. However, it does present the challenge of keeping its historical designation while upgrading the school to a usable space. Necessary renovations include replaces windows, removing asbestos, and more.
