Opera Studio gives young singers the chance to learn the art of singing on stage. Performance opportunities include fully staged operas with chamber ensemble, opera scenes and multiple other special events on and off campus. Students in the course will engage in character study through observation and improvisatory exercises, with special emphasis given to the interpretation of music and the use of the singing voice as a crucial part of character development. Operatic repertory will focus on music composed up through the eighteenth century, operettas and contemporary chamber operas or musicals appropriate for young voices.

Semele
By George Frideric Handel

Directed by Michael Chipman
January 23 & 24, 2015, 7:30PM

Vieve Gore Concert Hall

In the opening scene of Handel’s opera Semele at Westminster College, the immortal god, Jupiter, is a vampire who wreaks havoc on a young girl’s wedding and swoops her away to his vampire lair where he proceeds to kiss and bite her.
Although the staging will have a contemporary feel (and will take place in the deep American south),
the music will be quintessential Handel!
