Opera Studio gives young singers the chance to learn the art of singing on stage. Performance opportunities include fully staged operas with chamber ensemble, opera scenes and multiple other special events on and off campus. Students in the course will engage in character study through observation and improvisatory exercises, with special emphasis given to the interpretation of music and the use of the singing voice as a crucial part of character development. Operatic repertory will focus on music composed up through the eighteenth century, operettas and contemporary chamber operas or musicals appropriate for young voices.

Westminster Opera Studio is thrilled to present the college's first fully staged opera, Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, in the Courage Theatre. Although written in the late 17th century, Purcell's luscious melodies and exquisite harmonies evoke a timeless and deeply human story that still resonates with audiences, hundreds of years after it was first performed in England. Our spectacular singers will be accompanied by a professional chamber ensemble, consisting of string quartet and harpsichord. This event inaugurates an exciting new chapter in Westminster's musical history, introducing authentic classical chamber opera to Salt Lake City audiences.
