Databases

You can see a list of some of the Biology magazines and journals the Library provides for you. View this online slideshow to learn how to see if the Library holds a particular journal that you are looking for.

The databases below offer you a wide range of information, chiefly in the form of journal articles. The Library subscribes to many of these journals online or in print. If we don't have the article you need, we can get you a copy at no cost to you. View this slideshow to learn more.

You can order articles we don't own here, but to save yourself time and frustration, double check first to make sure we don't have what you need. Ask a Librarian if you need assistance.

Databases you should try when looking for journal articles include:

Academic Search Premier

This is a large, all-purpose database that includes a great amount of full-text content.

BioOne

In addition to the full text of a number of important Bioscience journals, BioOne features "Top Ten" current bioscience articles, daily Science news, monthly features, and more.

JSTOR

JSTOR is an extensive online archive of academic and research journals--including many in the Biological and other Sciences--with coverage going back for decades.

Annual Reviews

Comprehensive, timely collections of critical reviews written by leading scientists.

PubMed

Developed by the National Library of Medicine in partnership with the National Insitutes of Health, PubMed offers a staggering array of journal citations in the Biosciences. If you've never used PubMed before, it can be a little overwhelming. An online tutorial is available. Ask a Librarian if you'd like some assistance or would like to schedule an appointment to learn to use PubMed.

There is also a complete list of databases the Library has in support of the Sciences, many of which you'll become more familiar with as you move into your upper-division coursework. Take some time to explore them, and Ask a Librarian if you have any quesions.

Websites

When looking for web sites related to Biology:

Try using an academic search engine like Scirus, InfoMine, or Complete Planet.

Academic search engines like these often get you better information more suitable for your college-level work faster than general search engines like Yahoo! or Google, and also index large areas of the Web that general search engines don't see.

Web sites Dr. Baxter recommends for you include:
